Amazon KDP and IngramSpark covers

Where to put the barcode on your book cover

Short answer

Put the barcode at the bottom of the back cover, usually in the lower right corner, on a solid white area, upright and square to the edges. Keep at least 0.25 in (6.3 mm) between the barcode area and both the spine and the trim. Place the file at 100% and do not stretch it. The US book industry guidelines describe the bottom of the barcode about 1/4 in above the bottom of the cover.

Measure from the trim, not the bleed

Your cover file is larger than the printed book, because it includes bleed (KDP and IngramSpark both use 0.125 in on paperbacks). The 0.25 in clearance is measured from the trim line, where the book will be cut, not from the outer edge of the file. On a full-wrap cover, the spine is in the middle, so on the back cover the spine side is the right edge. In practice:

Use the template your printer gives you; it shows trim, bleed and safe areas as guides.

Step by step in InDesign, Affinity Publisher or Illustrator

  1. Make the barcode PDF with your ISBN. Choose the layout for your printer (KDP layout, IngramSpark layout) or plain ISBN or ISBN + price.
  2. Open the cover template from your printer, or set guides for trim, bleed and spine.
  3. Place the PDF. InDesign: File, Place. Affinity Publisher: File, Place. Illustrator: File, Place. Do not paste a screenshot.
  4. Check the scale is 100%. In InDesign, select the frame and look at the scale fields in the Control panel. If the platform gave you an exact box size, the KDP and IngramSpark layouts already match it.
  5. Move it into position in the lower right of the back cover, inside the safe area, with white behind it.
  6. Export the cover with your printer's preset (often PDF/X-1a or PDF/X-4), without converting the black to a profile.
  7. Check the exported PDF: the barcode should be on the black plate only, and still vector. How to check.

If your layout program asks how to place a PDF page, choose the crop to the art or bounding box option you normally use for logos, and keep transparency settings as they are.

What about Canva and other web tools?

Most web design tools accept PDF or SVG uploads, but some convert them to images on upload. If your barcode becomes an image, it can still work at 300 PPI and 100% size, which is what KDP accepts for raster. Check the final exported cover PDF the same way: zoom in, look at the edges, check the separations.

Frequently asked questions

Can the barcode go on the lower left?

On left-to-right books the lower right is the usual place and where KDP adds its own. KDP's cover help says right-to-left books get the barcode in the lower left. The US guidelines allow anywhere along the bottom of the back cover.

Can I put the barcode on the inside cover?

For a normal book, no. Shops expect it on the back cover.

Can I make the white box smaller than the KDP box?

If you place your own barcode, KDP's minimum is 1.4 x 0.8 in. The barcode still needs its quiet zones and white background.

Does the barcode have to be horizontal?

Yes for KDP, which asks for right side up and square to the cover. It is also what scanners at the till expect.
