# ISBN generator: can you create your own ISBN?

> No tool can create a real ISBN. It comes from your country's ISBN agency, free in some countries. Then a generator turns the ISBN you own into a barcode.

## Short answer

No. You cannot create your own ISBN, and no ISBN generator can make a real one for you. An ISBN is assigned by the national ISBN agency of the country where the publisher is based, and each agency hands out numbers from its own range. Some agencies give ISBNs free, for example Library and Archives Canada for eligible Canadian publishers, and Amazon KDP offers a free ISBN that works only on KDP. What a tool can do is turn an ISBN you already own into a barcode.

## Why a tool cannot create an ISBN

The International ISBN Agency gives each ISBN registration agency its own prefixes and number ranges. That is how every ISBN stays unique worldwide. There are over 150 registration agencies, serving publishers in more than 200 countries and territories.

The agency then assigns ISBNs to publishers in its area. The International ISBN Agency's advice is short: publishers should apply to their national ISBN agency.

The last digit of an ISBN is a check digit, calculated from the other digits. So a tool can easily make up 13 digits that pass the check digit test. But that number is not registered to you. It may sit in a range that belongs to another publisher. Barcode Rocket checks the check digit before you download, but a correct check digit only means the number is well formed, not that it is yours.

> The ISBN Users' Manual says that once an ISBN is assigned to a publication, it can never be reused for another one, even if it was assigned in error.

## Free ISBNs: where they exist

Whether an ISBN costs money depends on your country. The International ISBN Agency says some agencies receive government or other funding, which lets them provide a free service to publishers. Others charge a fee.

- **Canada.** Library and Archives Canada says eligible Canadian publishers may request free ISBNs. A self-publishing author must be physically located in Canada. Publishers that publish only in French apply through BAnQ instead.
- **Other countries.** Find your agency on the International ISBN Agency's [Find an agency](https://www.isbn-international.org/agencies) list, and check its own page for the price or the free service.

### The free KDP ISBN

Amazon KDP offers a free ISBN for paperback and hardcover books. KDP's help says these ISBNs cannot be used to publish outside of KDP, and your book shows "Independently published" as the imprint. For Kindle ebooks, KDP says an ISBN is optional.

A free KDP ISBN can be enough if you sell that edition only on KDP. If you want to sell the same paperback through other printers, or under your own imprint name, get your own ISBN from your agency. More on this in [where to get an ISBN](https://barcoderocket.com/articles/where-to-get-an-isbn).

## What did you search for?

People who search for an ISBN generator usually want one of two things:

- **An ISBN for a new book.** Get it from your national agency, or use a free platform ISBN with its limits. No tool can make one.
- **A barcode for an ISBN you already have.** That is what a barcode generator does, and it is what Barcode Rocket makes.

## Turn your ISBN into a barcode

The barcode on a book is your ISBN drawn as an EAN-13 symbol. Once you have the ISBN, you can make the barcode yourself:

1. In the [Barcode Rocket generator](https://barcoderocket.com/?type=isbnp#try), click **Books**, then **ISBN**, **KDP layout** or **IngramSpark layout**.
2. Type your 13-digit ISBN. On a layout with a price add-on, type the price, or leave it empty for 90000 (no price).
3. When PRINT CHECK says **Ready**, click **Download vector PDF**. The file is a vector PDF in 100% K black.

It is free and needs no account. Step by step with pictures: [How do I make an ISBN barcode for my book?](https://barcoderocket.com/help/book-barcodes/isbn-barcode)

## Frequently asked questions

### Is there a free ISBN number generator?

No tool can generate a valid ISBN that is registered to you. Free ISBNs come from agencies that offer a free service, such as Library and Archives Canada for eligible Canadian publishers, or from platforms such as KDP, with their limits.

### Can I make up an ISBN for my book?

No. A made-up number is not registered to you and may belong to another publisher's range. Apply to the ISBN agency of your country.

### Does Barcode Rocket sell or create ISBNs?

No. We do not sell ISBNs and never invent one. Barcode Rocket turns an ISBN you already own into a print-ready barcode.

### Do I need an ISBN to make a book barcode?

Yes. The book barcode is made from the ISBN, so you need the ISBN first.
